The Lowdown On Light Therapy
Our skincare routines are so much more than just that. They've become literal rituals that help us keep our wellbeing in check, one product at a time.
The industry has exploded over the past few years, and we see a lot more than just creams and SPFs these days. Today, we're delving into some of our favourite light-therapy skincare devices in our boutique, to prove that no, they're not just pretty lights.
So how do they work?
There's actually a lot of science behind these futuristic-looking masks. Similar to how sunlight emits wavelengths that contain UVA rays, these masks produce visible wavelengths of light which penetrate the skin to trigger changes in our cells. But rest assured, these sorts of lights won't provide a sun-tan. The different colours target an entire array of different skin concerns; from anti-aging, acne-scarring, hyper-pigmentation and more.
Different lights and their uses...
It's true that each colour penetrates the skin at a different depth, which is why they can be used to help with different issues. For example:
Blue light works on the surface layer of your skin. It's the ideal wavelength for targeting acne, as it can remove the harmful bacteria that causes breakouts.
Yellow light is able to travel a little further into the skin. This light helps with redness, aiding with rosacea and inflammation.
Red light is able to penetrate deeper into the skin. This colour helps with collagen production, wrinkles and smoothing the skin.
White light, also known as infrared, this wavelength can travel the furthest through the skin, to give boosted results and rejuvenate the skin.
Is it safe?
In short, yes! It's safe and completely painless.
Unlike sunlight, LED light therapy doesn’t contain any harmful UV rays, so it wont give you sunburn or damage your skin the way sunlight does.
The treatment also has very low levels of heat, so it won't burn the skin. However, if you are on any medication which makes you extra photosensitive, exposure isn’t recommended. Make sure you speak to your aesthetician or GP before use!
Does it actually work...?
We are so used to products that sell us dreams. We can guarantee you that LED light therapy most definitely does work. It's completely evidence and science-backed, so you can count on it!
Originally, NASA used LED lights to try and grow plants in space, only to discover, completely by coincidence, that light therapy could help with stimulating wound healing. Now it’s being used in skin treatments! There are still ongoing studies into all that LED light therapy treatments can offer.
However, to see those jaw-dropping results you might be looking for, it's advised that you would need to keep up with regular treatments.
Many clinics offer LED light therapy treatments, which can be effective, but quite costly. Luckily, with the power of modern technology, at-home treatments are available, which come with a lot of different options and specialisms, so you can find the right therapy device for you.
Here are a few currently in our boutique to get you glowing:
